Who Is Dalton Rushing?

Dalton Wayne Rushing was born on February 21, 2001, in Memphis, Tennessee. The talented catcher attended Brighton High School before continuing his baseball career at the University of Louisville.

At Louisville, Rushing established himself as one of college baseball’s premier offensive players. His strong performances quickly placed him on the radar of MLB scouts across the country.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Rushing with the 40th overall pick in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Shortly after being drafted, he signed with the organization and began what would become a rapid climb through the Dodgers’ farm system.

At 25 years old, Rushing already possesses the physical tools and maturity needed to succeed at the highest level. Standing approximately 6-foot-0 and weighing around 220 pounds, he offers a powerful left-handed bat along with solid defensive skills behind the plate.

Dalton Rushing’s Journey Through the Dodgers System

Few prospects have risen through the Dodgers organization as quickly as Dalton Rushing.

After making his professional debut in 2022, Rushing wasted little time proving he belonged among baseball’s elite prospects. At nearly every level of the minor leagues, he demonstrated impressive offensive production.

His breakout season came in 2024 when he split time between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. During that campaign, Rushing showcased his power by hitting 26 home runs while driving in 85 runs. His overall offensive consistency earned him widespread recognition and strengthened his standing as one of the top prospects in baseball.

The Dodgers also began expanding Rushing’s defensive responsibilities. While catcher remains his primary position, the organization started using him at first base and in the outfield. This versatility significantly increased his chances of reaching the major leagues sooner.

The Dodgers eventually promoted Rushing to the majors in May 2025, marking a major milestone in his career.

Dalton Rushing Stats Continue to Impress

Dalton Rushing’s statistics have consistently reflected his offensive potential.

Throughout his minor league career, he posted impressive numbers in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Those performances helped establish him as one of the best offensive catchers in the minor leagues.

During the 2026 MLB season, Rushing has continued to contribute for Los Angeles. Through the early portion of the season, he has recorded a batting average near .245 while adding home runs, RBIs, and a strong on-base percentage.

More importantly, Rushing has demonstrated advanced plate discipline. He consistently works deep counts, draws walks, and rarely chases pitches outside the strike zone.

These qualities make him an ideal fit for the Dodgers’ offensive philosophy.

Dalton Rushing and Will Smith: A Unique Partnership

One of the most interesting aspects of Rushing’s career is his relationship with Dodgers catcher Will Smith.

Smith remains one of Major League Baseball’s elite catchers and is firmly established as the Dodgers’ primary starter behind the plate. In 2024, Smith signed a long-term contract extension that solidified his role within the organization for years to come.

Because Smith occupies the everyday catching position, the Dodgers have adopted a creative approach to maximize Rushing’s value.

Rather than limiting Rushing strictly to catcher duties, Los Angeles has utilized him at several positions, including first base, designated hitter, and left field. This strategy allows manager Dave Roberts to keep both players in the lineup while also preserving Smith during the long MLB season.

The arrangement benefits everyone involved. Smith receives additional rest, while Rushing gains valuable major league experience and regular at-bats.

Many baseball analysts believe the duo could form one of the National League’s most productive catching tandems for years.

Learning Alongside Shohei Ohtani

For any young player, sharing a clubhouse with Shohei Ohtani represents a tremendous opportunity.

Ohtani is widely regarded as one of the greatest talents in baseball history due to his extraordinary ability to excel both as a hitter and pitcher.

As a catcher, Rushing has had opportunities to work closely with Ohtani during games and practices. Catching elite pitchers requires advanced game-management skills, and those experiences should accelerate Rushing’s development.

Additionally, observing Ohtani’s work ethic on a daily basis provides invaluable lessons for a young player attempting to establish himself in the major leagues.

The presence of Ohtani also creates additional lineup flexibility for the Dodgers, potentially opening more opportunities for Rushing to contribute offensively.

Dalton Rushing Contract Details

Because Dalton Rushing recently reached the major leagues, he remains under team control for several years.

After being selected in the 2022 MLB Draft, Rushing signed with the Dodgers for a signing bonus reportedly worth nearly $2 million.

As a young player still in the early stages of his MLB career, he is currently playing under the standard rookie salary structure. He has not yet become eligible for salary arbitration or free agency.

However, if Rushing continues developing into an everyday player, many industry observers believe he could eventually receive a substantial contract extension from the Dodgers.

Los Angeles has a history of investing heavily in homegrown talent, making a future long-term agreement a realistic possibility.

What Is Next for Dalton Rushing?

The future appears extremely bright for Dalton Rushing.

The Dodgers view him as an important part of their long-term plans, and his offensive upside gives him the potential to become a cornerstone player.

His versatility further increases his value. Whether he ultimately settles as a full-time catcher, first baseman, designated hitter, or multi-position player, Rushing possesses the talent to impact winning at the major league level.

For now, Dodgers fans can enjoy watching one of baseball’s brightest young stars continue his development.

With his combination of power, patience, athleticism, and versatility, Dalton Rushing appears poised to play a significant role in Los Angeles for many years to come.
